SAMUEL WAXMAN PIONEER OF RESEARCH

****
SAMUEL WAXMAN, M.D.

THE PIONEER OF GROUNDBREAKING CANCER RESEARCH
****

Samuel Waxman

Samuel Waxman, M.D., the Founder and the Scientific Director of the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF), has dedicated his entire career as an oncologist/hematologist to developing minimally toxic therapies to improve the lives of cancer survivors worldwide. In collaboration with other researchers around the globe, Dr. Waxman helped find a cure for a rare leukemia known as acute promyelocytic leukemia, which once had a 100 percent fatality rate but now has a 95 percent survival rate.

Convinced that collaboration brings faster cures to patients, Dr. Waxman founded the SWCRF and its unique concept of the Institute Without Walls to bridge the gap between the bench and bedside. The scientists who are funded by the SWCRF have made significant breakthroughs in cancer research, including identifying pathways to deliver drugs and novel therapies to treat cancer. Presently, Dr. Waxman and members of his lab have made a major discovery in a devastating form of breast cancer that affects young women, Black women and Hispanic women—known as triple-negative breast cancer. He and his colleagues are also examining the reasons why cancer metastasizes and spreads to other organs to reduce the mortality associated with the disease.

Dr. Waxman has authored hundreds of scientific papers and was among the first scientists to study differentiation as a cancer therapy. He has also contributed chapters in textbooks on hematology, chemotherapy and nutrition, as well as authoring two books—Differentiation Therapy and The Leukemia Cell. Dr. Waxman is the distinguished service professor of Medicine and Oncologic Sciences at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. A valued member of New York City’s Mount Sinai's Medical Center for over 30 years, Dr. Waxman currently holds a variety of positions, including Professor Consultant, Shanghai Second Medical University, Head, Rochelle Belfer Chemotherapy Foundation Laboratory in the Division of Medical Oncology at The Mount Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Waxman also helped found the International Conference on the Differentiation Therapy of Cancer, which brings together researchers from around the globe every two years.

The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation is an international organization dedicated to curing and preventing cancer. The Foundation is a pioneer in cancer research, focusing on uncovering the causes of cancer and reprogramming cancer cells and dedicates themselves to delivering tailored, minimally toxic treatments to patients. Its mission is to eradicate cancer by bridging the gap between lab science and the patient. Through its collaborative group of world-class scientists, the Institute Without Walls, investigators share information and tools to speed the pace of cancer research. Since its inception in 1976, the Foundation has awarded more than $75 million to support the work of more than 175 researchers across the globe.

The 14th Annual Collaborating For a Cure dinner and auction was yet another great success for the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF). The event took place at the New York City landmark Park Avenue Armory on Thursday, November 17, 2011. Known affectionately by New Yorkers as “The Waxman,” the yearly fête is considered to be among the top annual fundraising events in New York City. SWCRF Board Chairman Michael Nierenberg introduced the man of the evening, Dr. Samuel Waxman who thanked guests, as well as the Foundation team, for continuing to support the breakthrough work of the SWCRF, “I hope you feel you saved one life and saved the world by collaborating with us for a cure.” The dinner, auction and concert was attended by more than 1,100 corporate executives, board members, and their guests. The 14th Annual Waxman benefit raised more than $3 million to support the Foundation’s research efforts to produce a cure for cancer, reprogramming cancer cells to deliver tailored, minimally toxic treatments to patients. The scientists who are funded by the SWCRF have made significant breakthroughs in cancer research, including identifying pathways to deliver drugs and novel therapies to treat cancer.

Sheryl Crow

Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter and breast cancer survivor Sheryl Crow stole the show at the 13th Annual Collaborating for a Cure Dinner and Auction to benefit the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF). At the elegant Park Avenue Armory, Sheryl performed a seventy-five minute concert, including her latest single Summer Day and the fan-favorite If It Makes You Happy to a sold-out crowd of 1,400.

Among the guests and research scientists in attendance, Dr. Samuel Waxman was the man of the evening. In his welcoming speech, he remarked that government funding for cancer research is limited in the current economy, and that the national cancer rate continues to rise. He concluded that “we must invest in fighting cancer, and the SWCRF will give you the best return.” The triumph of the night was thanks to the hard work of event chairs Elin and Michael Nierenberg, Dale and Peter Claman, Alyssa and Cliff Greenberg, and Kristin Fizulich. Other notable guests included SWCRF Executive Director Gwen Darien; SWCRF Associate Scientific Directors Dr. Ethan Dmitrovsky and Dr. Jonathan Licht; SWCRF Board of Directors members, Thomas A. Conway Gary Gladstein, Dennis A. Herman, Linda Herman, Gary Jacob, J. Jay Mautner, Musa Mayer, Laurie L. Schaffran, Howard Shlafmitz, Clifford Sterling, David S. Taub, Spencer Waxman and Dena K. Weiner; Bald is Beautiful founder Sharon Blynn; fundraisers Jean & Jackie Shafiroff; Ceslie Armstrong; Katlean de Monchy and TV personality Joe Terranova. Event planner Robin Lathrop of BYROBIN set the mood with a creative take on centerpieces. Robin forwent traditional floral arrangements and created centerpieces that celebrated the work of the Foundation, as they read: $75 Million and counting. 175 Researchers. 3 Continents. 35 Years of Breakthrough Research.

The evening’s live and silent auctions offered guests the opportunity to bid on a selection of exciting items, including a Seven-Night-Stay for up to 10 guests in the Ian Fleming Villa at the Goldeneye Resort via Private Jet Service, which garnered the highest bid of the evening with $100,000, a signed guitar by rock n’ roll icons Aerosmith that earned $12,000, and a Father and Son Road Trip, complete with travel aboard the New York Giants’ private jet, a stay at the team’s hotel and tickets to a game with pre-field access, which earned $33,000. Silent auction items included dinner for eight at Daniel, two tickets to meet Jerry Seinfeld after a show and a private shopping experience for six at David Yurman. Once again led by C. Hugh Hildesley of Sotheby’s Auction House, the Live Auction raised nearly $1 million. Guests received a preview of Live and Silent Auction items at www.charitybuzz.com. Following the live auction items, guests were invited to ‘bid on science,’ which raised close to $900,000 toward cancer research.

As Sheryl later noted, “without foundations like the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation, we would be much further behind in finding a cure.” Thanks to the millions raised last night, the SWCRF is one big step closer to their goal.

The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation is an international organization dedicated to curing and preventing cancer. The SWCRF is a pioneer in cancer research, focusing on uncovering the causes of cancer and reprogramming cancer cells. The Foundation is dedicated to delivering tailored, minimally toxic treatments to patients. Through their collaborative network of world-class scientists, the Institute Without Walls, investigators share information and tools to speed the pace of discoveries in cancer research. They believe that collaboration is the most critical means to delivery practicable treatments from science more rapidly.
