Murdoch owns 37% of the newspapers in Britain, which is not a good thing. The man has terrorized countless people in Britain, Europe and America, via his company News Corp and newspaper subsidiary News International.

Murdoch loves to use his minions to illegally dig dirt on other people, via phone hacking, computer hacking and stalking, then publishes it for an undue financial profit, but refuses to write about his incontinence and erectile dysfunction. What happened to being "fair and balanced."

Q104.3, New York’s Classic Rock, announced today that its morning show host, Jim Kerr, was honored by HeartShare Human Services of New York during a house dedication ceremony on Wednesday, May 23, 2012. HeartShare, a nonprofit organization that provides residential services to individuals with developmental disabilities, will name one of its group homes for adults the Jim Kerr House.

Kerr hosts the Jim Kerr Rock & Roll Morning Show weekday mornings from 5-9:00 a.m. on Q104.3. He has been a member of the Board of Directors for HeartShare Human Services of New York since 1987. To celebrate Kerr’s 25 years of dedication and commitment to the nonprofit organization, HeartShare will name one of its group homes for adults with developmental disabilities the Jim Kerr House. HeartShare Human Services of New York has 28 group homes and 35 supported apartments, in addition to all of its other services. The Jim Kerr House opened in 2002 in Flushing, Queens and is home to six women with developmental disabilities.

“We felt that Jim’s years of devotion to HeartShare warranted this special recognition,” said HeartShare’s President and CEO William R. Guarinello. “Jim’s involvement in the house will be as steadfast and engaging as his role on the Board of Directors. HeartShare is proud to have Jim’s name on one of our homes.”

In twenty-five years, the NYWF will reach $33 million in funding to over 280 women-lead, nonprofit organizations, improving the lives of 5.4 million women and girls in New York City; 81% of those nonprofits succeed in thriving today. This year, the NYWF Celebrating Women® Breakfast had over 2,300 guests in attendance.

NYWF Board Chair, Diana Taylor welcomed all attendees and introduced the 69 Grantee Partners for the NYWF, seated on stage on the dias, to the Breakfast. Speaker of the New York City Council, Christine Quinn then spoke regarding her work with the gay and lesbian community, applauded President Obama on his support for marriage equality and praised the NYWF for “making [New York City] and the world, a better place for every girl.” Afterward, NYWF Founding Mothers Helen LaKelly Hunt and Betty Terrell-Cruz, were brought to the stage, and spoke about the advancement of the NYWF since its inception in 1987.

Merble Reagon, honoree, was introduced and spoke regarding the self-sufficiency calculator she helped to create and her desire to sustain the work that NYWF supports for the future, “I started doing this work for my generation, I continue for my daughter’s and granddaughter’s generations.” Honoree, Ai-jen Poo, also spoke regarding the work, “care, love and support,” that NYWF does which spans multiple generations. Ms. Poo noted that, “when women on the front lines of inequality come together to affect change, everyone wins.”

Following the two honorees, four women were introduced and spoke regarding their experience with grantee partners of the NYWF. According to Sheena, “failing is not a sign of weakness, it’s the steps you take after that.” Another young woman, Ebony, then spoke about being arrested at a young age, while pregnant, and having her daughter while in jail. After her release from jail, she lived in a grantee partner run home where she built herself up and changed her life, she said, “change takes time, love makes the difference.”

Ana Oliveira, President & CEO of the NYWF took the stage and spoke about the ‘game changing time of 2012’ for the foundation. She then introduced Robyn Brady Ince, Anita Channapati, and Anne Delaney, Co-Chairs of the 2012 Celebrating Women® Breakfast.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton accepted the Century Award from Abigail E. Disney, her longtime friend. Secretary Clinton honored the grantees that comprise the New York Women’s Foundation and spoke about overcoming difficult circumstances as women, movingly referencing her mother as an example. Secretary Clinton noted that her mother overcame financial difficulties but remained resilient and committed to her family not only by helping herself, but with the assistance and kindness of others. She mentioned that we now take this kindness for granted, “but in the 1920’s there weren’t a lot of formal organizations doing this kind of work.” Secretary Clinton also “expressed on behalf of [her] mother great gratitude for reaching out that hand, for providing that support, that safe place, and for giving hope and love to so many who need it.”

Ai-jen Poo has been organizing immigrant women workers in New York since 1996, where she started as the Women Workers Project organizer at CAAAV Organizing Asian Communities. In 2000 she helped start Domestic Workers United, an organization of nannies, housekeepers and elderly caregivers in New York organizing for power, respect, fair labor standards and to help build the social justice movement. DWU led the way to the passage of the first Domestic Workers Bill of Rights in 2010, historic legislation to extend basic labor protections to over 200,000 domestic workers in New York State. DWU helped to organize the first national meeting of domestic workers organizations at the US Social Forum in 2007, which resulted in the formation of the National Domestic Workers Alliance. In April 2010, she became Director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance. Ai-jen also serves on the Board of Social Justice Leadership, the Seasons Fund for Social Transformation, the Labor Advisory Board at Cornell ILR School, Momsrising.org, National Jobs with Justice, the New Labor Forum Editorial Board, Working America and the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy.

Merble Reagon is Executive Director of the Women’s Center for Education and Career Advancement in New York City. The Women’s Center was established as a program of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. (NCNW) in 1970 to meet the workforce development needs of women who had a marginal relationship to the paid work force and continues to serve low-income women and their families through a variety of programs and services designed to help them achieve economic security. She has worked for more than 35 years to create greater opportunities for low-wage workers in the business and public sectors. She has conducted management, diversity and workforce development training for non-profit, legal and women’s organizations, government agencies and others. Her early work in the Civil Rights Movement included community organizing in Harlem and Newark, NJ; it was followed by community development work in several states across the country. ANOTHER UNDERHANDED REPUBLICAN VOTE

NOTE: This was sent to us by Liz Krueger on March 15th, so we guess this underhanded vote took place the night of the 14th and the early morning hours of the 15th. The Republicans continue to use underhanded tactics not only in the presidential race, but here in Albany New York. The message is clear from everyone in the Republican party these days. Protect the rich at all cost and use every under handed way to reach their goal. The Republicans need to be voted out of office once and for all. We need more honest politicians like Liz Krueger. When will this madness stop?

I want to take the opportunity to explain what happened after midnight last night in the State Legislature.

Last night, around midnight on the morning of the Ides of March, my Senate Democratic colleagues and I refused to support a backroom deal on redistricting that protects incumbent legislators by disenfranchising minorities, discriminating against voters from New York City and Long Island, and blatantly violating the Voting Rights Act.

When we tried to raise these issues in debate, the Republican Senate leadership silenced us – violating a previously agreed-to time frame for debating the measure. Faced with a bill that would violate New Yorkers’ voting rights, and denied even the opportunity to speak on the floor of the Senate, we stood up for New Yorkers in the only way left to us – by standing up and leaving the Senate Chamber. We refused to legitimize their cowardly censorship of floor debate, an open attack on deliberative democracy. We were thus marked absent on the vote, but let me be clear: my vote was NO!

Then, continuing into the dead of night, the Senate passed bills that had just been introduced on Tier VI Pensions, casino gambling, teacher evaluations, and DNA collection. All of these bills were then voted on while the ink was still wet, after I and my Democratic colleagues had left the chamber. These are all important legislative measures that should have been reviewed, discussed and debated on the merits – but instead they were passed between midnight and 4 a.m., with no real opportunity for legislators to review or consider them.

There was no committee review or discussion and no public notice, nor did they age for three days as required. They were delivered with Messages of Necessity from the governor – which allows skipping the normal process under emergency circumstances. What was the emergency?

This procedure was used because passing them was the trade off for the governor agreeing to sign the gerrymandered redistricting lines. I and my colleagues would have loved the opportunity to study and debate these specific proposals, but because that was not permitted, we were prepared to vote no last night.

I feel my colleagues made an important statement by refusing to participate in the farce that occurred last night in the Capitol. There has been much talk about a ‘new New York’ and in particular a new, functional, transparent Albany, but passing bills in the dead of night certainly does not meet that description. With backroom deals on redistricting and constitutional amendments, with 4 a.m. votes on bills too new to even have been read, with the doors to the Capitol literally locked down to shut out the public – we have been brought back to the ugly days of the past.

I am proud of my Democratic colleagues for being the only ones willing to take a stand for 19.5 million New Yorkers’ voting rights, for small-‘d’ democracy in our state, and for the ‘new New York’ I will continue to fight for that is, sadly, not yet a reality.

The New York Women’s Foundation® hosted the 10th Annual Girls’ Leadership Day in partnership with Girls Incorporated of New York City last week at the Urban Assembly Institute in Brooklyn. Girls Lead the Way: Taking Personal and Community Action hosted keynote speaker Tiffany Dufu, president of The White House Project, and 196 girls aged 13-19 from 14 community-based organizations from the five boroughs and Long Island, as well as 40 parents and staff chaperones.



The leadership filled day offered a morning group activity with all participants, then networking lunch sessions with topics such as construction, education, entrepreneurship, finance, government and public services, human resources, law, media and marketing, nonprofit, philanthropy, science and medicine, and lastly, technology. To end the day, participants attended different workshops such as Leading the Way to Economic Dependence, Empowering Teen Girls to Help Girls Around the World, Teen Dating Violence 101, Exploring Career and High School Options, Unpacking Your Leadership Toolbox, and Introduction to Youth Activism.



The 10th Annual New York Women’s Foundation Girls’ Leadership Day presented in partnership with Girls Incorporated of New York City gives many thanks to CITYarts, Dove Movement for Self Esteem, Eileen Fisher, The Grantee Partner Action Group, The Urban Assembly Institute, The Volunteer Action Group, The White House Project and Tiffany Dufu.

Military Personnel and their loved ones

The Soldiers Project

Thousands of troops from Long Island have served in Operation Iraqi Freedom (Iraq), Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) and the Gulf War. Of those who have returned and will be returning home, the prevalence rates for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Military Sexual Trauma (MST), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and related psychiatric problems are at least 30%.



All of these service men and women have families and loved ones, creating a great need for emotional support in our communities.



Returning home from being in combat presents real challenges made even greater when a soldier has been deployed multiple times. The ethos of the military is to survive and endure, not to seek out help, which makes our efforts all the more criti­cal. Families are adjusting to a shifting dynamic, and need marital, educational and occupational guidance as well. Veterans, wives, husbands, children, parents, and other loved ones are all affected by the separation that is part of serving in the military.



The children of our dedicated military men and women are especially vulnerable to the impact of these separations imposed by war as their parents are away serving out their tours of duty. As if this were not difficult enough, there are those who must bear permanent loss due to a parent’s service related combat death or even suicide.



THE SOLDIERS PROJECT is a private, non-profit group of volunteer licensed psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, mental health nurses and marriage and family therapists that was established to provide free confidential counseling to military personnel who have served in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Gulf War and their loved ones (including girlfriends, boyfriends, spouses, children, parents and grandparents).


THE SOLDIERS PROJECT is outside the military; it operates on a private practice model, with free counseling sessions offered in private offices, with no red tape, a flexible schedule, and no limit to the number of sessions. Learn More about The Soldiers Project Here....
