During the taping of an upcoming episode of public television’s “The Truth About Money with Ric Edelman,” guest Phil Rosenthal, creator of the hit sitcom, “Everybody Loves Raymond,” divulged what the initial pitch meeting was like, when he and Ray Romano sat down with CBS honcho Les Moonves to sell him on green-lighting the show.
ROSENTHAL ON PITCH MEETING:
“What you want to do is…have all your ducks in a row when you come in. So you bring your star, and I bring in Ray Romano…He sat there not knowing what to say or do because he’d never been in this situation...He looked like he was going to take Mr. Moonves’ hard candies off the table if someone wasn’t watching. So he was kind of a lox. I wasn’t so great, either.”
ROSENTHAL ON REALITY TELEVISION:
Later during the interview, Rosenthal, a New York native, offered his assessment of the current state of television, given the ubiquitous reality show: “I think this glut of reality shows that we’re experiencing right now could be signaling something larger than just a trend, and that is the end of civilization.”
ROSENTHAL ON THE POSSIBILITY OF BEING KIDNAPPED AND RANSOMED:
When discussing his plans to travel to Moscow for the making of the Russian-language version of “Everybody Loves Raymond,” Rosenthal disclosed “Somebody said, ‘Oh, you’re going to Moscow? Make sure you have K&R insurance.’ I said, ‘What’s that?’ They said, ‘Kidnap and ransom.’ I said, ‘Oh, that’s very interesting. I’m not going,’ and Sony said, ‘Oh, you don’t have to worry. That doesn’t happen. That never happens.’ I said, ‘It happens enough for there to be an abbreviation."
