Burmese Child

Aung San Suu Kyi With Robert Lieberman

Shot clandestinely over a 2-year period by best-selling novelist and filmmaker Robert H. Lieberman while he worked for the US Embassy in Burma, it includes a rare and revealing narration by Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, newly released after 15 years of house arrest. “The Lady’s” tale of Burma is interwoven with stunning images of a country that has been held hostage and isolated by a brutal and superstitious military regime for 48 years. The result is an astonishing and evocative portrait of a place that is a mystery to much of the world.

The documentary culled from over 120 hours of striking images, is an impressionistic journey that takes us across the vastness of Burma. During Lieberman's time in Burma he was constantly filming, even though it was forbidden and risky for him to do so— and repeatedly drew him into trouble.

The world premier of this documentary film will coincide with the release of the feature “The Lady” directed by Luc Besson starring Michele Yeoh in the role of Aung San Suu Kyi.

In pre-screenings in the US and Europe, people have been lining up for tickets and theaters sold out.

Lieberman’s latest novel is “The Last Boy.” Alison Lurie, Pulitzer Prize-winning author, wrote in her review: "In this remarkable and moving novel, a small-town thriller about a missing child becomes a fantasy with universal implications for anyone who cares about the fate of the earth."
