The Volkswagen XL1 prototype had its US premiere on the occasion of the announcement of a partnership with the Museum of Modern Art in New York City to support innovative exhibitions and education programs at MoMA and MoMA PS1. Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG and Lucy Liu drove up to the "Blue Carpet" in the XL1 Eco-Friendly concept car. Lucy Liu was honored to be part of this event. "I think it is amazing what Volkswagen is doing. Art and technology coming together." With fuel consumption of one litre of gas for every 62 miles the new Volkswagen XL1 only emits 24 g/km CO2. Since it is designed as a plug-in hybrid, the XL1 prototype can also be driven for up to 35 kilometers (22 miles) in pure electric mode, i.e. with zero emissions at point of use. The battery can be charged from a conventional household electric outlet.

Other celebrities attending the special evening included Kim Cattrall, Penn Badgley, Padma Lakshmi, Kelly Rutherford, Susan Rockefeller, Chloe Sevigny, Yoko Ono, and Rachel Weisz. After the reveal of the XL1 there were cocktails in the sculpture garden followed by a seated dinner. The night also included a special solo performances by violinist Hahn-Bin. After dinner, guests enjoyed a special live performance by James Murphy, Pat Mahoney and Nancy Whang (LCD Soundsystem dj set).
